Lake Jackson is a small community about fifty miles south of downtown Houston. The community sits a few miles in from the Gulf of Mexico and was founded as a planned community in the mid twentieth century by the family of the founder of Dow Chemical Company.

Today, Lake Jackson is still home to the Dow Chemical Company who is one of the largest employers in the area. After Dow, the Brazosport Independent School District is estimated to be the second largest employer. Together, these industries bring in thousands of visitors and business travelers annually. Also of note in this area is the headquarters for one of the nation’s most beloved gas station and convenience store chains, Buc-ee’s.

Despite its size, Lake Jackson offers visitors a number of things to do. If time allows, learn more about the marine life of the nearby Gulf of Mexico with a visit to Sea Center Texas. Consider visiting the Gulf Coast Bird Observatory to find out more about how the center protects birds of the Gulf as well as their habitats. And do not forget to stop at the city’s History Museum for a peek into the past.
